A46 to close for resurfacing

A BUSY stretch of the A46 is to close in both directions every night for almost a month.

The stretch affected is between the M40 junction 15 Longbridge roundabout and the A452 Interchange for Leamington and Kenilworth.

The closures will kick in at 8pm on Monday, 18th July, until 6am the next morning. That will be repeated every night until Wednesday, 10th August.

The road surface is said to be in need of being replaced as it has, in places, reached the end of it 15-year serviceable life, said a spokesman for Warwickshire County Council

The spokesman added: "The A46 at this location is predominantly Hot Rolled Asphalt which is in excess of 15 years old and has reached the end of its serviceable life.

"Following consultation with its Network Management Team, a diversion route has been agreed by the council and it is accepted that the works are urgent and extensive, requiring full road closures to ensure the safety of the workforce and the travelling public.

"The urgent patch repairs are only at locations where the carriageway has either already failed and has had emergency temporary repairs, is likely to fail in the short term as it shows elevated signs of distress, or will not hold structure over the winter maintenance period.

"These works are a holding measure pending a robust solution over the next 12 months.

"All Traffic management options were explored, however because the nature of the road and required repairs it is not safe to complete the works under lane closures as there would be no safety zone from the planed carriageway section to the open live lane.

"Therefore the only traffic management arrangement to complete the works is a full closure of the A46."
