BBC bosses were left red faced when it was discovered that a blue plaque unveiled in Tanworth to celebrate the life and work of local musician, songwriter and poet – Nick Drake (pictured below) – has the wrong birth date on it.

The plaque was unveiled at the house where Nick Drake spent most of his childhood in Tanworth and where he died aged 26 in 1974.

The error on the plaque states the singer was born in 1946, but birth records show the musician's birthday was actually 19th June, 1948.

The Bell pub in Tanworth near to the former home of the folk musician was the scene of a celebration of Nick Drake’s life. Local musician Simon Fowler of Ocean Colour Scene paid tribute to the singer's genius.

The BBC said it was aware of the error and will be correcting it soon.
