Purchase a pony paddock and become Lord of the Manor

ANYONE who likes the idea of becoming a lord of the manor and has some cash to spare can bid to be the Lord of the Manor of Bearley next Tuesday for around £20,000 to £30,000.

A public auction will be held at Henley Golf and Country Club at 6.30pm on 4th September but in order to secure the official title of Lordship of the Manor of Bearley the bid includes the purchase of a small parcel of land - 0.34 acres - at Snitterfield Road, Bearley.

Auctioners John Earle have written in their auction brief that selling pony paddocks is not unusual for them but this particular parcel of land does come with the Lordship of the Manor of Bearley title and is the first time it’s come up for sale since 1929 when the tenancy was ten shillings per year.

However, the title doesn’t give the buyer the right to ‘market tolls, rents, impound stray cattle and sell them’ it is simply an ancient manorial title that might appeal to a wide range of people including residents of Henley and Beaudesert.

It’s thought the rectangular piece of land will continue to be used as pasture, allotment or for pony grazing.
