WILDLIFE took the central theme of the Open Gardens event at Wellesbourne and Hunscote on Sunday (23rd June).

Organised by Sustainable Wellesbourne, who are supported by the parish council, 15 very different gardens were open to the public.

Among them was garden designer Lucy Hartley’s garden, with its tall lawn, orchids and mix of wild flowers.

Lucy told the Herald: “We have such a diversity of gardens, ranging from very wild to the formal, all gardened with wildlife in mind.

“The gardens were all beautiful in different ways and it was a real ‘feel-good’ day – for both volunteers and the 140 or so visitors that came. It sounded like people really enjoyed the extra dimension that wildlife friendly gardens can bring.”

The day has raised £750 so far, with funds going to the Heart of England Forest, Warwickshire Hedgehog Rescue and Warwickshire Wildlife Trust.

Tass Smith, founder of Grapevine Environmental Action Team in Hampton Lucy, said: “I visited around half of the gardens and picked up ideas in many of them. It was good to see such a wide range of approaches and lots of enthusiasm from the gardening hosts and their visitors.”
