World champion Giglia sets sights on Paralympic gold
DOUBLE world champion Megan Giglia is hoping to thrive on the pressure as she bids to claim gold at the Paralympics in Rio.
The Stratford cyclist heads into Thursday's C1-3 3km pursuit as one of the big favourites to bag a medal, despite having only taken up the sport three years ago.
In 2013, Giglia suffered a debilitating stroke, which left her with paralysis on her right side.
Since then, the 31-year-old has won both the pursuit and time trial at this year’s paracycling track World Championships and her remarkable run of success is expected to continue in Brazil.
“There is pressure as everyone expects you to achieve and you don’t want to disappoint,” said Giglia, who will also go for gold in the 500m time trial, road time trial and road race.
“I always go into the race environment the same — relaxed and humorous — as it’s the only way I know how to be.
“No athlete should ever be complacent. There is always someone chasing after your spot, especially once you are at the top, so I’m keeping level headed and focused on my race.
“I will be as ready as I can be. The team and myself have put a lot of time and effort into making this happen and becoming the reality that it is.”
