Bears coach proud of his players despite tough weekend

WARWICKSHIRE Bears women's coach Jacob Robinson declared himself proud of his team after they competed in the opening round of the British Wheelchair Basketball Women's League in Sheffield last weekend.

The event proved to be a tough one for the Bears, who lost both of their games on Saturday before having to forfeit Sunday's matches due to the forecast of heavy snow.

"The girls did really well and should be proud of their efforts," said Robinson.

"Hopefully they will learn from the experiences they have had. Going forward, we know that, as a team, we need to work harder at training and support one another’s development so we can continue to compete against such well drilled teams.

"They all have the ability but we just need more experience playing together as a team.”

The first game against Worcester Wolves was an eye-opener. Wolves had no trouble finding the Bears' basket, whilst holding a tight defensive grip on their own basket in the process.

Warwickshire put up a spirited opposition, and kept going until the final buzzer, but they were unable to trouble Worcester, who cruised to a 42-18 victory.

In the second game of the day, the Bears WBC once again took on a talented, well drilled and infamous opponent, when they came up against Angels of the North 2.

Once again, the Bears found it hard to bring together their varying levels of game experience to make any in-roads into the Angels basket, whilst the Angels took full advantage of their high levels of skill and experience to pull easily away and maintain a healthy gap between the teams.

Despite a marked and continued improvement by Bears throughout the game, it was not enough to stop the Angels claiming a convincing 34-19 success.

Bears return to action on 7th January when the Bears' first and third teams travel to Leicester to take on the Cobras.
