KATE Sergent produced a magnificent effort to win her section in last weekend’s Birmingham Black Country Half Marathon.

The Stratford AC member finished in a time of 2.05.59, which was 15 minutes quicker than last year’s effort, earning her the age group victory by just under a minute.

Team-mate Maria Haslam also took on the challenging course, that runs from Wolverhampton city centre and finishes in Brindley Place, in the centre of Birmingham. Haslam clocked a time of 2.06.53, continuing her steady build-up as she prepares for the Chester Marathon in September.

With recent personal bests in both the parkrun and 10k races, the signs are that she will soon be back to her best.

The race was won by Martin Williams in 1.10.26, while the first lady finisher was Ann Holyland in 1.23.06, claiming sixth overall.

Meanwhile, six Stratford AC runners took part in the Monty 5k race in Leamington Spa.

The course was advertised as flat and fast, but the wet and muddy conditions ensured it was not as fast as it might have been.

Runners headed from the Edmondscote track towards the town centre alongside the River Leam, before returning through Victoria Park, back alongside the river, before finishing, Olympic style, with a lap of the track.

First Stratford runner home, by a comfortable margin, was Kate Wright (18.56). Wright finished in 48th place and was first in her age group.

Next to finish was David Jones (22.36), claiming fourth in his age group despite it being his third race in five days.

The other Stratford finishers were Dave Maundrell (24.01), Ruth Calderbank (25.41) and Kate Sergent (26.47) fourth and fifth respectively in their age group and Jan McLure (27.35).

The race was won by Alistair Smith in 15.52, while the first lady finisher was Kati Hope in 18.09.
