Fowler excited by his latest talented batch

STUDLEY stormed to a 3-0 victory over visitors Romulus on Monday to make it back-to-back wins in the MFL Premier Division.

And boss Mike Fowler is excited by his current crop of youngsters and what he feels they could achieve if he can keep his side together.

New signing Szhem Whyte-Hall struck all three goals as the Bees dominated throughout, building on their 1-0 defeat of previously unbeaten Stourport Swifts on Bank Holiday Monday.

He struck first on 19 minutes when he turned in a cross from the left wing and then doubled his and Studley’s tally seven minutes before the break from the penalty spot after being brought down.

The second half saw him hit the crossbar before completing his hat-trick on 74 minutes when he headed in a corner.

Fowler said: “Szhem works incredibly hard. He could have scored five and is an absolute dream to work with.

“He has a lot to learn and still needs my guidance tactically during games but he certainly doesn’t need my help when it comes to putting the ball in the net. I have no doubt that if he keeps progressing along this path then he will make it as a professional.

“He is such a humble lad and is so dedicated to getting better. There is real potential there and it is difficult to say where he will get to but it is clear that he is far too good for this level. He has scored four in two games and scored eight in pre-season. Those kinds of numbers you can only dream of as a player.

“He thinks this is the right environment for him to flourish and develop and he is playing with a smile on his face.”

And Fowler said that his side’s tricky start to the season, with exits from the FA Cup and Vase and defeats in their opening two league games, will help them going forward.

He added: “It has been a tough start and we have had to work incredibly hard. We’ve had to restart a few things because we had had a decent pre-season.

“Those experiences from the early games have kick-started us into what we have produced tonight [against Romulus] – a complete performance that had everything. We have worked hard to get to that level. We have had to go back to basics again – a solid shape and foundation – and the good football has come out of that.

“I’m pleased because I am tough on them and I’ve asked some direct questions of them. They have responded really well.

“We were top last year and only lost one of our first ten games but I believe the ceiling of this group, if we can keep them together, could be higher.

“It is going to be a bumpy road though because they are so young and learning their craft.”

Earlswood Town had to settle for a share of the spoils in their early MFL Division Two basement battle with Lane Head on Saturday.

The hosts had striker Andy Matthews back in red and white to make his 39th appearance for the club while fellow ex-AFC Coventry Rangers teammate Keelan Reilly made his Earls debut.

With both teams nervously looking over their shoulder at bottom-placed Inkberrow before kick off, this felt like an early must-win fixture.

And it got off to the worst start for Earlswood as David Maison found himself inadvertently playing the Lane Head front line on-side to allow Asher Ansah a simple finish past Aflie Pyott from close range on ten minutes.

The remainder of the first-half remained uneventful with neither goalkeeper called into action.

The Earls came out of the traps after the break and Jake Potter went close with an effort from distance.

Skipper Louis Bridges did find the target with a smart finish just inside the Lane Head area as last season’s top goalscorer registered his first of the season midway through the half.

With Lane Head down the ten owing to an injury and lack of substitutes, the Earls went on the attack but could not find a way through a stubborn blue-shirted backline.

In Division One of the Hellenic League, FC Stratford won 1-0 at Chipping Sodbury Town with the only goal coming courtesy of a fine strike from Dan Chaundy on the hour.

Shipston Excelsior made a winning start to life in Division One of the Oxfordshire League with a 7-0 victory at Charlton United.
