COACH Tom Masterson hailed an “awesome” display from Warwickshire Bears as they produced a riproaring display to defeat London Titans 2nds in their first match of the season.

The Bears had trailed in a close-fought contest against the team that had pipped them to second spot in the National League Division One South.

But with 58 seconds left Henley-based Bears edged in front with Dan Gill slotting home two free shots to level. Then Jacob Robinson scored a final basket to seal a 56-54 victory.

“What a game to start the season off,” said Masterson.

“We knew it would be close. I am so proud of all the team but have to give a special mention to my guards Lee Powell, Derek Hall and especially Rob Whale.

“They were all awesome. To beat a team as good as Titans is a massive achievement for the club, but it’s still only the first game and we have a long hard season ahead of us.”

Neither team was able to gain any headway as they matched each other basket for basket, to end the first quarter with Titans ahead by a single point, 16-15.

The Titans pulled ahead by eight points in the second quarter but Andy Dear’s fantastic shooting took the Bears to within a point at 30-29.

The second half continued the drama as Titans pushed ahead at 44-42 going into the final quarter.

But with Andy Dear and the Weeks’ brothers, Andy and Chris, leading the way, the Bears seized the initiative.

In Division Two South, the Bears’ Seconds went down 54-25 to a strong Titans 3rds.

With a number of forwards missing, it was going to be a hard game for the Bears. With the help of Bears 3 team players Harry Draper and Aaron Grant, the Bears battled hard but Titans were convincing winners.

The Bears’ Third team played a strong game but lost 56-35 to Wolverhampton SC in Division Three Central. As part of the fixture, the Bears Women’s Team took to the floor as a complete squad for the first time this season, in preparation for their upcoming fixtures.

The Bears are next in action when the 3rds play fixtures away to Jaguars 2nds on Saturday and Derby Wheelblazers on Sunday.

The Bears are still looking for a sponsor for the team and also always looking to recruit new members especially female and junior players. Contact Bears at info@bearswbc.com or call 07946 518354 for more details.
