Ruthless Bears seal title in emphatic style

WARWICKSHIRE Bears confirmed their position as British Wheelchair Basketball League Second Division South champions with a comprehensive 61-16 victory at Blackhawks on Sunday.

With the title virtually won before the game, it gave the opportunity for the Bears to take some of the squad players to state their claim for a place in the team ahead of the National Championship play-offs in Worcester on 4th-5th June.

“It was a good win and it’s given me lots to think about, said Bears’ coach Tom Masterson after the game.

“Today was an ideal chance to look at those players looking for a place in the squad that we’ll take to Worcester.

“Many of them made a great case for that against Blackhawks.”

The Bears were in control of the game from the tip-off and even with Invictus player Nerys Pearce playing for Blackhawks, they were unable to make any in roads into the Bears’ impressive defence.

Warwickshire took control of the offensive basketball, running up an imposing score.

With impressive displays from Aimee Hillson, Rick Powell, Liz Grinnell and Andy Stow, the Bears led from the beginnng and won all four quarters, whilst also limiting Blackhawks to few chances.

Paul Colbourne (18) led the Bears’ scoring, while Derek Hall and Lee Powell chipped in with 12 apiece.

Bears return to action when they travel to Worcester for the British Wheelchair Basketball National Play-offs on 4th June.
