Stratford's Davies claims title despite late drama

STRATFORD’S Jim Davies narrowly won the 750 Motor Club MR-2 Championship after a thrilling race at Donington Park.

Davies maintained a healthy lead throughout the 2016 championship, competing against more than 40 other drivers.

However, at the penultimate race at Rockingham, Davies had a collision with a back marker he thought had moved out of his way, meaning it all came down to the final race at Donington.

And Davies, who is a co-owner of Stratford Tyres on Avenue Farm Industrial Estate, had to finish in no less than third place or his nearest rival Kristian White could snatch the title.

With half a lap before the chequered flag, both Davies and White were involved in an incident, which sent Davies off the track into the gravel.

Footage showed White’s car lose control, turning in front of Davies, who swerved into the gravel to avoid a collision.

That would have been the end, but Davies ploughed through the gravel and finished with just enough points to claim the championship title.

Leading cars were scrutinised by officials at Donington, unusual but routine, fuel samples sent away for analysis, the results are therefore classified as pending, but expected to stand.
