STRATFORD mixed martial arts team Team Peixoto are celebrating after claiming a bronze medal at a prestigious jiu jitsu tournament on Sunday.

The team, who train at the Avon Sports Bar on Western Road, went up against some of the top fighters in the country at the event in Southend.

Representing Team Peixoto were Louise Carrington, Ingus Mircenko, Chris Zemblaku, Keiron Pope and Alex Haynes.

“It was a very, very tough tournament,” said instructor, Victor Peixoto.

“Some of my students started training two months ago for this tournament and I’m so proud of them.

“They all produced good performances.”

The team returned to training on Wednesday, in training for another tournament in Bournemouth on 10th June.

Peixoto added: “We have some big tournaments this year.

“We are going to try to do better in the next one and build on the performance in Southend.”

Haynes is also preparing for his first amateur 93kg MMA fight, which is set to take place in London on 24th June.

Meanwhile, the team are seeking sponsors for their fighters and anyone interested should contact Victor on 07854 708857 or e-mail nadadorverde@live.com
