Warwick Boat Club's Willis loses on comeback
SURPRISE Wimbledon star Marcus Willis was beaten in his first ATP match since losing to Roger Federer on Centre Court in June.
The Warwick Boat Club tennis coach was given a qualifying wildcard at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna but lost 6-3 6-7 (9-11) 6-4 to Moldova's world number 103 Radu Albot.
"I fought hard today," said Willis.
"I'm gutted I couldn't get the win but great experience and lots to be positive about."
Willis was ranked 772 when he won six qualifying matches and then beat 53rd-ranked Ricardis Berankis at Wimbledon.
The 26-year-old was also a wildcard entry in Sunday's Tie Break Tens exhibition event, also in Vienna.
Willis bowed out in the group stage following defeats to British number one Andy Murray and Goran Ivanisevic.
"I got going a bit too late," said Willis.
"But it was an awesome experience and I'm honoured to have been invited."
