Warwickshire Bears tamed by star-studded CWBA
WARWICKSHIRE Bears returned to earth with a bump following a 58-32 defeat to BWB First Division South title favourites CWBA on Sunday.
With a host of GB internationals in their line-up, CWBA were always going to be a tough test for the newly-promoted Bears.
The CWBA team featured Paralympians Charlotte Moore and Joy Haizelden, back from their success with the GB women’s wheelchair basketball team at the recent Rio Paralympics.
The first quarter was a close game with the Bears fighting to stay within touch of CWBA and it proved to be a close affair, with the Bears trailing 10-6.
Warwickshire came out with plenty of determination in the second quarter and they pulled the score back to 23-22 at half-time.
The third quarter was another close affair, with both teams unable to pull away and the score changing in favour of both teams repeatedly. Bears trailed by four points heading into the final quarter.
CWBA came out in the final quarter and showed their experience, limiting Bears to rare rights at their baskets and they pulled away to finish as comfortable winners.
“I’d like to congratulate CWBA on a fantastic win,” said Bears’ coach, Tom Masterson.
“We will go away and hopefully learn from today and learn that this is a new level for many of the team.
“We need to up our game so much more if we are to live with these teams.”
Meanwhile, Bears' second string continued their winning start to the season with a 47-26 victory over CWBA 3rds.
Coach Tom Masterson was delighted with his players’ performances, who he says have staked a claim for a place in the first team in future matches.
He said: “Thanks to our second team, we were able to get some joy from today.
“It was pleasing to see how some of them have come on. Hopefully they will soon be pushing for more court time in the senior team.”
The Bears are still looking for a sponsor for the team and also looking to recruit new members, especially female and junior players.
