Landscape artist Lawrence Coulson visits
Acclaimed artist Lawrence Coulson will be making a guest appearance at Castle Galleries, Stratford, on Saturday.
Lawrence will be in residence between 1pm and 4pm to present a newly curated exhibition of his work.
The Cambridge-based artist who only took up painting seriously aged 21, is best known for his oil paintings which bring to life dramatic open spaces and alluring skylines. His art takes the viewer on a tour of the British landscape – enchanting countryside scenes and calming coastal settings – with each oil painting evoking a surreal sense of serenity and atmosphere through the use of vibrant blues, ethereal purples and warm oranges. They capture a moment in time, immersing the viewer in a sense of space and timelessness.
Lawrence has been selling his art commercially with Birmingham based art publishers Washington Green since 1999, making him the company’s longest serving artist. Over 15 years on and he remains one of the company’s best-selling artists.
He said: “My landscape paintings focus on the atmosphere of particular locations rather than the geographical characteristics. I am interested in what they make the viewer feel and what they can draw out of the painting. Collectors in the past have employed wonderful phrases to describe the work, ranging from ‘escapist’, ‘romantic’ and ‘melancholy’ – all of which pretty much grasp what I am trying to achieve.”
